The Postal Service Is Cutting Saturday Mail

Advertisements

This is one of those stories that shows the problems going on in Washington!  On Wednesday; the United States Postal Service announced plans to cut out Saturday mail delivery service on August 1st.  This move is expected to save around $2 billion a year.  The Postal Service would still deliver packages and mail to P.O. boxes on Saturdays.  Sure, most people thinks this an awesome move and it should have been done years ago.

No doubt; the Postal Service has bled money for years.  The agency posted a nearly $16 billion loss in 2012 which is unacceptable!  For far too long, the U.S. mail has been in a declining rate.  The reasons are very simple; because we pay bills online and use E-mail.  These options are free and easy to use.  The mail today has become a source of junk and bills people don’t want to see.  Here and there I might get a letter from somebody.  But most of the time the mail is either junk or bills.  This can make people depressing!

USPS is having to get permission from Congress to make changes to save money.  And so far; the only thing Congress has done is sit on their rear-ends and fight.  Some people have to rely on the U.S. Mail to get important things like medicine and paychecks.  And if Monday is a federal holiday, these folks might have to wait for four days!  This could be a life or death situation.  Also, rural areas have to rely on the U.S. Mail.  Will FedEx and UPS commit to delivering everywhere each weekday?

On The Ed Show on MSNBC, Ed Schultz is claiming the Republicans wants the Postal Service to be privatized.  Ed talked about a Think Progress article that should shock you.  Read it by clicking the link.

The article claims; Under the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, Congress has for years forced the USPS to pre-fund 75 years’ worth of pensions for its employees, a requirement not made of any other public or private institution.  That means that the Postal Service is footing the bill for employees it hasn’t even hired yet.  The USPS doesn’t actually receive money from the government, but still needs Congressional approval to make any changes to its structure.  An analysis in July showed that the USPS, without its pension requirement, would have a $1.5 billion surplus.

So you can now say that this is a purposeful effort to kill the post office and to privatize it so people can make lots of money from you and me.  If this is the real reason, everyone’s going to really love it when it costs $5 to mail a letter.  Because if the Postal Service is taken out for good; FedEx, UPS and other private carriers can charge you whatever they feel like because you will have no other choice.  This looks like a scheme to privatize another part of government and get rid of middle class jobs.  That’s the standard GOP chant these days isn’t?  In my opinion, This is all about money, money, money.

Since I am a Aspie and have Asperger’s Syndrome.  I have formed the opinion that people should not take advantage of other people and be greedy.  These days, the amount of people being greedy and taking advantage of other people is through the roof!  Maybe this is the reason I can’t find a job and have been unemployed for 19 months.  I believe the well-off are scared that I might expose them of anything that is going wrong.  And they will not risk hiring me so they can keep the greedy train going. (breathes slowly)  At least I still have this blog; so I can talk about things like this!
