Here’s a post I want to write! If you have not seen an episode of Archer on FX, are you living under a rock? Archer is an animated sitcom made in Georgia and has been on the air since 2010. This show deals with your undercover worldwide spies and it involves a family affair! The show is set at ISIS, the International Secret Intelligence Service in New York City. Suave but incredibly self-centered master spy Sterling Archer deals with global espionage; his domineering, hypersexual mother/boss, Malory Archer; his ex-girlfriend Lana Kane; and his other ISIS co-workers, agent Ray Gillette, accountant Cyril Figgis, Human Resources Director Pam Poovey, secretary Cheryl Tunt, and Applied Research head Doctor Krieger; as well as a less-than-masculine code name: “Duchess.”
One interesting thing about this show is it uses different time eras and deliberately mixes technologies. You see different clothing styles, hair styles, backdrops, vehicles, weapons, and technology. The characters wear 1960s clothing and hair styles and many episodes feature references to the Soviet Union as a current nation and to Fidel Castro as the current leader of Cuba. Sure, you see the characters using cell phones, GPS devices, and laser gunsights. But this is the International Secret Intelligence Service, so these technologies are only available to those working within ISIS due to its use of advanced technologies. Video is NSFW.
What I like about this show is all the nasty action you see. This is why the show is rated TV-MA. You see lots of gun violence, nudity, blood, cuss words, drinking, and anything else that is not suitable for kids! Each episode of Archer takes a couple of months to produce after the completion of the script. The show is mostly animated by Reed’s Floyd County Productions in Atlanta, Georgia. The artistic style of the series was designed to be as realistic as possible, so the character designers used as much reference material as they could. The character drawings are based on Atlanta-area models; they coincidentally resemble some of the voice actors in the series. Basically this show is like a 1960’s comic book come to life!
The first two episodes of season four have been fun to watch! The first episode featured a crossover of the FOX animated show Bob’s Burgers. Somehow Archer got amnesia, brought about by the trauma of watching his mother get married, and believes he is now a fry cook at a burger joint. And when you have the Russia Mafia or KGB trying to kill Archer, you know ISIS has to bring back Archer’s memories. The second episode features Archer and his former best friend Lucas Troy. Being alone in the Vermont Wilderness will not turn out well!
