TV Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Geek Alabama TV Reviews

On Tuesday night, ABC premiered Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  The show picks up after The Avengers movie as agent Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) puts together a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to handle strange new cases.  Each case will test the team in cooperation and ingenuity as they try to work together figuring out newly emerging superhuman individuals in the world.  The pilot episode was watched by 11.9 million and earned a 4.6 rating in the adult demo and was the highest-rated drama debut in almost four years!  So did the show live up to its hype, or was it a disappointment?  Below the picture, I will share my thoughts about the pilot episode, so if you have not seen the episode yet, SPOILER ALERT!

To sum it up, the pilot episode was well done!  The pilot episode begins with a great montage of The Avengers superheroes before we see a father and a kid looking through a comic book shop window.  Then a building nearby explodes!  Mike Peterson (played by J. August Richards), rescues a person trapped inside a burning building.  By the way, I loved how he leaped out of that building and landed like that!  Sadly, he runs away after rescuing the person.  The next chunk of the episode got boring for a while, we get introduced to Agent Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton) while he is fighting guys in Paris with some weird French music playing in the background.  Then the most awesome Phil Coulson appears from a dark area, Coulson Lives!

We get to see the secret level 7 inside S.H.I.E.L.D. which has some cool techy stuff!  Then we see Skye (played by Chloe Bennet) trying to convince Mike Peterson that S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming after him.  Skye’s character is very geeky and nerdy, she really knows her computers and tech stuff!  Coulson convinces Agent Melinda May (played by Ming-Na Wen) to go back into the field.  Then we see Coulson’s car Lola being loaded onto a giant airplane, as a friendly reminder, don’t touch Lola!  Somehow, Skye is broadcasting some classified information about the Rising Tide from a van in an alley.  Yep, Agent Coulson finds her and kidnaps her!

Agents from S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives in a building to find any secrets from the hacker group while Skye is being interrogated by Coulson.  One scene featured some very cool tech stuff in a form of scanners that scanned the entire building and every item.  And we also got introduced to a truth drug.  Being Agent Coulson, he first injected the drug into Agent Grant Ward.  Agent Ward admitted to mask the pain of the injection to impress beautiful women and to look more manly, yes that stuff works fast!  Skye then gets the chance to grill Agent Ward and he had to tell the truth, that was a great moment!

Agent Coulson uses a high-tech smart table to examine Mike Peterson and then the team goes to work.  Mike Peterson appears in a hospital room to check on a person.  He complains that he is not advancing in life and wants to advance, but he is told to disappear, which he does.  The guy is not doing well mentally, mostly because he was fired from his job without workers comp.  By the way, I loved the hologram technology we see in this part of the episode!  Mike has the Extremis virus and if you have seen Iron Man 3, he has enough juice inside his body to blow up a two city block.

Mike Peterson then barricades himself inside a van then takes over a train station and the agents with Maria Hill from The Avengers tries to stop the bad guy.  Mike is strong, several guys tries to fight with Mike, but they are thrown around like toys.  By the way, did you catch the part where Mike (who is black) is falling down in front of a mural of black people?  Some people have commented that they found that ironic.  Then we saw the best part of this pilot episode, a standoff between Agent Coulson and Mike Peterson.  Mike is crying out for help, then he is put down by a shooter but it was not to kill him, it was to heal him from the Extremis virus.  A good ending!

J August Richards Agents of SHIELD

To wrap up the pilot, Agent Coulson and Skye takes Lola for a spin and the car flies!  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started off slowly, but the action did pick up at the end of the pilot episode!  Disney and ABC are going to make sure this show succeeds!  They have poured millions of dollars into the production of this show and they want everyone to like this show.  I am willing to bet we will see repeats of this show being aired on other Disney owned channels like ABC Family or maybe even Disney Channel, the show is only rated TV-PG V.  I have faith in Joss Whedon and he knows what he is doing!  I hope we will get to see a superhero make a special appearance in one episode this season, that would be awesome!

The show will continue to have great ratings throughout it’s first season and I am sure the show will get better!  Marvel’s accusation by Disney was a beautiful thing!  ABC will be developing more shows from the Marvel Universe.  And we will get to see more awesome movies from the Marvel superheroes!  The suits from Disney must be smiling right about now!  By the way, did you see the Coulson Reveal!  He was never dead in the first place, Director Nick Fury faked his death to motivate The Avengers and sent him on vacation to Tahiti with a physical therapist.  He was technically dead for eight seconds.  Did you catch that?

The Best 5 New Fall TV Shows For Geeks/Nerds

Next week, the new Fall TV season will officially kick off on the broadcast networks!  There are many new and returning shows battling each other for your eyeballs.  So I have compiled a list of seven new shows premiering this Fall that any geek or nerd should watch!  Let’s start with the obvious pick.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Created and directed by Joss Whedon who made The Avengers.  The show is based on Marvel Comics’ secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles, including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates, since being introduced in the 1960s.  The military law-enforcement agency’s moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics.

This show is being billed as having the same magic and charm from the Marvel movies.  I mean, we will get to see some new superheroes and see Agent Coulson on TV!  I can not wait to see this show and you should watch it!  The show premieres on Tuesday September 24th at 7pm central on ABC.

Almost Human

Created by J.H. Wyman and produced by J.J. Abrams, Almost Human is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids.  An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world.

This show is futuristic and going to be interesting.  Some people say robots will soon get smart enough to take over the human race.  Could this show serve as a wake up call?  The show premieres on Monday November 4th at 7pm central on FOX.

The Blacklist

Created by John Eisendrath, the plot of the show is interesting. The world’s most wanted criminal mysteriously turns himself in and offers to give up everyone he has ever worked with.  His only condition is he will only work with a newly-minted FBI agent (Megan Boone) with whom he seemingly has no connection with.

Why would a criminal turn himself in and rat other people out.  That is going to be the interesting part of this TV show!  This show premieres on Monday September 23rd at 9pm central on NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show

Created by Michael J. Fox and Will Gluck, this show is inspired by the former Family Ties actor’s life, Fox stars as a husband and father of three from New York City dealing with family, career and challenges — including Parkinson’s disease — as he goes back to work as a news anchor.

Since Michael J. Fox is a famous geek starring in those Back to the Future movies, this is a show that is worth a try!  The show premieres on Thursday September 26th at 8pm central on NBC.

The Tomorrow People

This show is based on the original British television series of the same name, the series follows a group of young people who possess powers as the result of human evolution.  These people are super-evolved humans with the three T’s (telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation), a coming of age story, and a big bad government organization led by Lucifer!

This show is getting a lot of buzz and I hope it’s worth watching!  This show premieres on Wednesday October 9th at 8pm central on The CW.

Shelby And Baldwin at A.P.F.

Two more panels at the Alabama Phoenix Festival featured two people whose careers are very interesting!  First up is Robin Shelby.  Her appearance was sponsored by the Alabama Ghostbusters.  Yes there is a group devoted to all things Ghostbusters.  In fact before the festival I had no clue this group existed.  I first saw them during Do Dah Day and I have to say this is a very devoted group!  The group had lots of fun with Robin Shelby over the entire weekend.  And during the panel we learned what its like to be inside the Slimer costume.

Robin Shelby had the honor of wearing the costume of the Slimer character in the Ghostbusters II movie.  Robin Shelby had auditioned for the role of Slimer and the casting team had her go through several steps.  She said it was a very simple process!  And later she found out she got the role of wearing the Slimer character.  And this costume or puppet had motors inside the costume to control the mouth and eyes.  And inside the costume Robin said it was “very loud.”  Every time there was a break in taping the crew put on K-Y Jelly to make it look like Slimer was slimy.  In fact she almost passed out while wearing the costume because it was too hot.  There were no fans or ways to get air inside the costume.

She called the times on the set “memorable days.”  She was lucky and loved meeting the cast on set.  And at times she also worked in front of a green screen.  She loved the experience in playing a role in the Ghostbusters movie franchise.  And she loves meeting the fans at all of the events she attends.  Robin Shelby found the Alabama Ghostbusters after the state went through the April 27th tornado outbreak in 2011.  And they raised around $3,000 for the relief effort.  Currently the Alabama Ghostbusters has around 30 members around Alabama and they travel to events and raise money for charities.

Robin Shelby runs the YouTube channel Far From the Tree.  And she called the art of the Slimer puppet “dead.”  If another Ghostbusters movie is made Slimer will be done from CGI computers.  As for the Alabama Ghostbusters; some people asked about the equipment or props that they wear.  Yes there are plans online to build such things as a proton pack.  And the group is helping to keep the Ghostbusters brand alive.  Sony knows these groups exist.  But they do not bother any groups unless a group does something bad.  The group hopes there is a Ghostbusters 3 movie coming soon.  And that is something everyone would look forward too!  Find out more about the Alabama Ghostbusters at

A couple of videos were shown for the crowd during the panel.  And I found these videos on YouTube and these are neat to share.  This first video features Robin Shelby rehearsing a role for a scene in the Ghostbusters II movie.

And here is a video of Bill Murray hanging out with Robin Shelby for a few moments on the set of Ghostbusters II.

The other panel was with Adam Baldwin.  He was on the TV shows Chuck and Firefly.  And he was in the movies Serenity and Ordinary People.  Adam Baldwin has grown to love southern hospitality.  He has finished with the Chuck project and has another project lined up; but he can not talk about it.  And he enjoys his family, his pets, and he also enjoys his fans and conventions.  Of course some people asked him about his time on Firefly.

Adam Baldwin was heartbroken when Firefly was cancelled.  It broke Joss Whedon’s heart and the crew’s heart as well.  The cast loved each other on the set.  And everyone worked hard in making the show.  He called his time on the Firefly set “a family affair.”  He called Nathan Fillion the best actor on the series.  The cast was also thankful to wrap up plot points in the movie Serenity.  Adam had all of the Firefly scripts signed by all of the cast members.  He intended to keep them but decided to auction them off on eBay for charity.  He has kept the boots, shirts, and the knife from the series.

Adam Baldwin got into acting in 5th grade.  He loved the TV show The Three Stooges and loved to play games with his friends and family.  He was in a good theater program in his high school on the north side of Chicago.  And he stuck with it!  While in high school; he did not do well in the classroom.  He needed support from his peers as he watched his parents divorce.  He called himself “a messed up kid.”  He worked on a little known show on The Family Channel before Fox bought it.  And he worked on the shows The X-Files, Full Metal Jacket, and Angel among others.  Adam was very thankful for the role on Angel.  He said the character General John Casey from Chuck was one of his favorite roles ever.

Adam Baldwin has done voice acting as well.  He had a voice role on the movie Transformers: Prime.  And he said he would love to have a role in the Avengers 2 movie.  Adam said he loves voice acting.  He called people who did voice acting very talented.  And no one cares what you look like when you do voice acting.  What do you think Adam Baldwin prefers; movies or TV?  He calls movies cool, concentrated, and intense.  He called TV steady work and has no real end.  Plus it has better character development and better pay.  Adam Baldwin prefers TV work.

When Adam Baldwin dies; he would like to have on his tombstone “he is right.”  And he would love to see a Firefly animated series as well.  For more info. about Adam Baldwin follow him on Twitter @adamsbaldwin.
