Movie Review: Avengers Age Of Ultron

Geek Alabama Movie Review

Well, did you enjoy The Avengers: Age of Ultron? I mean, it’s on track to being one of the top grossing movies of all time! And the movie will be the top grossing movie of 2015. Well, at least until the new Star Wars film comes out this Christmas. So, did you enjoy seeing the beautiful scenery in Korea, South Africa, and Italy? Did you enjoy seeing the Hulk on his rampage? Did you enjoy seeing Scarlet Witch trying to mind control some of the Avengers? And, did you enjoy seeing Ultron almost destroying Earth, and trying to understand the Human culture at the same time? I did! This is a movie review of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, if you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read below, SPOILER ALERT!

So, the movie began with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye trying to raid a Hydra outpost in the fictional European country of Sokovia. The slow motion action scenes and the team fighting all of those military personnel was great to watch, what a great way to start the movie! The raid was to stop Wolfgang von Strucker, who has been experimenting on humans using the scepter previously wielded by Loki. Two of the experiments were twins Petro who has superhuman speed and Wanda who can put people under hypnosis. Stark was able to get Loki’s scepter and they discovered something very big!

The scepter has artificial intelligence inside the scepter’s gem. And before we see more about this, it was party time! We got to see Stan Lee get drunk, and we also got to see plenty of character development and laugher and jokes between the team. A good part about this movie other than the action scenes were the jokes and talk between the characters. More superhero movies needs to do what The Avengers has done beautifully. As for the scepter, it is secretly used to complete Stark’s “Ultron” global defense program. Ultron believes that he must eradicate humanity to save Earth, and he almost gets its wish later in the movie.

Ultron takes control of JARVIS, and it builds a couple of robots to attack The Avengers at their headquarters. Remember, The Avengers are still recovering from that party, and you have to believe that some of them are probably a little drunk. It all could have ended right here, but they get control of Ultron, and he gets out of the headquarters. You see, Ultron is using the world’s internet to get around. And as for JARVIS, he hid on a back part of the internet. Ultron ends up back in Sokovia, and kills off Strucker. The machine then begins to build his own robot army, doom and gloom time!

Other than building the army, Ultron goes to African shipyard to get some vibranium. Ultron knows the entire internet that he instantly wired the bad guys a lot of money, and also ripped off an arm of Ulysses Kalue. The Avengers are on their trail, and track Ultron, but while trying to defeat Ultron, the Scarlet Witch does her dirty work, and begins to put some of The Avengers under this hypnotic trance. We got to see some past history of Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, and the Hulk. It was amazing to watch their backstories, but we did not see much backstory from The Hulk. Instead, we saw the big green monster trying to destroy Johannesburg!

I love to see the bad things happen, so I wished we got to see more than just a hypnotic trance. I wished we saw Scarlet Witch put The Avengers under a full mind control! I mean, their entire minds are controlled and they can’t do anything else other than what they are told by their “master.” And man, did The Hulk cause some major damage, and some major backlash on social media! To get away from the mind controls and backlash, The Avengers goes into some hiding. And they hide on Hawkeye’s farm. We got to see that Hawkeye has a wife and two kids. And you begin to think that Hawkeye will be the one that is going to be killed later in the movie. I mean, the movie was doing a good job showing Hawkeye’s family. And you know that killing off the family man would be the thing this movie would do. Thankfully, Hawkeye’s wife and kids can breathe easier, because Hawkeye survives the final battle!

The team was about to break apart for good but then Nick Fury re-appears to talk the team into stopping Ultron. And stopping Ultron was crucial, because it was wanting to mind control Dr. Helen Cho and use her synthetic tissue technology vibranium, and the scepter’s gem to perfect a new body for him. A new body means game over for Earth! We got to see plenty of chase scenes in South Korea, and that runaway train scene was awesome! But, while Petro and Wanda were working with Ultron, Wanda reads Ultron’s mind, and discovers that it wants to destroy all humans on Earth! So naturally, the twins turns on Ultron. And Ultron can not keep that synthetic body, as The Avengers was able to take control of this body.

Stark was able to upload JARVIS into this synthetic body, and Thor returns from his soak in this cave hot springs to activate the body. The result, Vision is now here! And this is just in time, because Ultron is wanting to lift most of the Sokovia’s capital city upward using the rest of the vibranium to destroy humanity. Yep, many people become trapped on this lifting rock that is destined to come back down to kill them, and everyone on Earth too! The Avengers have two missions, stop the Ultron robots from activating the machine that would cause everyone to die, and protecting and evacuating the citizens. We get to see all of that amazing scenery of buildings crumbling, people almost falling to their death, and the Ultron robots wanting to destroy all humans!

And a miracle happens! Nick Fury and SHIELD arrives with a helicarrer to evacuate the citizens. The Avengers have to deal with stopping the Ultron robots from sabotaging the evacuation effort, and not letting the machine activate! And sadly, we see who dies, and it was Pietro. Yeah, Marvel was making us think that Hawkeye would die, but thankfully he lives, but it did get sad. It was either that kid or Pietro, I am sure some people were hoping that the kid would have died, so all the superheroes could have lived. To wrap things up, one of Ultron’s robots got to activate the machine, the rock falls to Earth, but Iron Man and Thor were able to overload the machine and destroy that rock. Well, everyone got to live, except for Pietro.

At the end, Vision makes sure Ultron is no longer a threat, Hulk flies off to Fiji, Hawkeye wants to retire and raise his family, Thor goes back to his home planet, and Tony Stark wants to step away from The Avengers, for now. But Captain America and Black Widow sticks around in a new Avengers headquarters, and we got to see a few new superheroes! And don’t worry, we will see Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye again in a future Avengers movie, I mean, Marvel wants their money! As for the movie, wow it was good! The writing and CGI scenes were perfection. The acting was some of the best of any Marvel movie. And all of the doom and gloom was hyped up, all for nothing.

Well, all superhero movies always ends with some good news, does it! I wish we would see a superhero movie where the results were different, and the superheroes were defeated, and everyone dies. While that rock was rising up into space, I was secretly wishing that The Avengers would fail, and that rock would crash back onto Earth, and we would see scenes of people dying. Maybe this is something DC Comics would be willing to do. The movie was really, really good! And I recommend all of you see it, ASAP! Now, let’s briefly talk about what Disney did with this movie. For the first time, they told all the theaters to not allow any passes. (employee, coupons, courtesy, free passes) This was the sign posted at my local theater.

I talked to the employees at the end of the movie, and they even can’t see the movie as an employee perk. Of course they can pay and see it, but this was an attempt by Disney to grab all the money they can. Look, it was not the fault of the theater chain, this was Disney wanting to stuff their vaults with as much of green paper as they can. Well, they will get to certainly do that!

TV Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Geek Alabama TV Reviews

On Tuesday night, ABC premiered Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  The show picks up after The Avengers movie as agent Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) puts together a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to handle strange new cases.  Each case will test the team in cooperation and ingenuity as they try to work together figuring out newly emerging superhuman individuals in the world.  The pilot episode was watched by 11.9 million and earned a 4.6 rating in the adult demo and was the highest-rated drama debut in almost four years!  So did the show live up to its hype, or was it a disappointment?  Below the picture, I will share my thoughts about the pilot episode, so if you have not seen the episode yet, SPOILER ALERT!

To sum it up, the pilot episode was well done!  The pilot episode begins with a great montage of The Avengers superheroes before we see a father and a kid looking through a comic book shop window.  Then a building nearby explodes!  Mike Peterson (played by J. August Richards), rescues a person trapped inside a burning building.  By the way, I loved how he leaped out of that building and landed like that!  Sadly, he runs away after rescuing the person.  The next chunk of the episode got boring for a while, we get introduced to Agent Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton) while he is fighting guys in Paris with some weird French music playing in the background.  Then the most awesome Phil Coulson appears from a dark area, Coulson Lives!

We get to see the secret level 7 inside S.H.I.E.L.D. which has some cool techy stuff!  Then we see Skye (played by Chloe Bennet) trying to convince Mike Peterson that S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming after him.  Skye’s character is very geeky and nerdy, she really knows her computers and tech stuff!  Coulson convinces Agent Melinda May (played by Ming-Na Wen) to go back into the field.  Then we see Coulson’s car Lola being loaded onto a giant airplane, as a friendly reminder, don’t touch Lola!  Somehow, Skye is broadcasting some classified information about the Rising Tide from a van in an alley.  Yep, Agent Coulson finds her and kidnaps her!

Agents from S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives in a building to find any secrets from the hacker group while Skye is being interrogated by Coulson.  One scene featured some very cool tech stuff in a form of scanners that scanned the entire building and every item.  And we also got introduced to a truth drug.  Being Agent Coulson, he first injected the drug into Agent Grant Ward.  Agent Ward admitted to mask the pain of the injection to impress beautiful women and to look more manly, yes that stuff works fast!  Skye then gets the chance to grill Agent Ward and he had to tell the truth, that was a great moment!

Agent Coulson uses a high-tech smart table to examine Mike Peterson and then the team goes to work.  Mike Peterson appears in a hospital room to check on a person.  He complains that he is not advancing in life and wants to advance, but he is told to disappear, which he does.  The guy is not doing well mentally, mostly because he was fired from his job without workers comp.  By the way, I loved the hologram technology we see in this part of the episode!  Mike has the Extremis virus and if you have seen Iron Man 3, he has enough juice inside his body to blow up a two city block.

Mike Peterson then barricades himself inside a van then takes over a train station and the agents with Maria Hill from The Avengers tries to stop the bad guy.  Mike is strong, several guys tries to fight with Mike, but they are thrown around like toys.  By the way, did you catch the part where Mike (who is black) is falling down in front of a mural of black people?  Some people have commented that they found that ironic.  Then we saw the best part of this pilot episode, a standoff between Agent Coulson and Mike Peterson.  Mike is crying out for help, then he is put down by a shooter but it was not to kill him, it was to heal him from the Extremis virus.  A good ending!

J August Richards Agents of SHIELD

To wrap up the pilot, Agent Coulson and Skye takes Lola for a spin and the car flies!  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. started off slowly, but the action did pick up at the end of the pilot episode!  Disney and ABC are going to make sure this show succeeds!  They have poured millions of dollars into the production of this show and they want everyone to like this show.  I am willing to bet we will see repeats of this show being aired on other Disney owned channels like ABC Family or maybe even Disney Channel, the show is only rated TV-PG V.  I have faith in Joss Whedon and he knows what he is doing!  I hope we will get to see a superhero make a special appearance in one episode this season, that would be awesome!

The show will continue to have great ratings throughout it’s first season and I am sure the show will get better!  Marvel’s accusation by Disney was a beautiful thing!  ABC will be developing more shows from the Marvel Universe.  And we will get to see more awesome movies from the Marvel superheroes!  The suits from Disney must be smiling right about now!  By the way, did you see the Coulson Reveal!  He was never dead in the first place, Director Nick Fury faked his death to motivate The Avengers and sent him on vacation to Tahiti with a physical therapist.  He was technically dead for eight seconds.  Did you catch that?

New episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesday nights at 8/7 pm central on ABC.  Learn more about the show at:

The Best 5 New Fall TV Shows For Geeks/Nerds

Next week, the new Fall TV season will officially kick off on the broadcast networks!  There are many new and returning shows battling each other for your eyeballs.  So I have compiled a list of seven new shows premiering this Fall that any geek or nerd should watch!  Let’s start with the obvious pick.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Created and directed by Joss Whedon who made The Avengers.  The show is based on Marvel Comics’ secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles, including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates, since being introduced in the 1960s.  The military law-enforcement agency’s moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics.

This show is being billed as having the same magic and charm from the Marvel movies.  I mean, we will get to see some new superheroes and see Agent Coulson on TV!  I can not wait to see this show and you should watch it!  The show premieres on Tuesday September 24th at 7pm central on ABC.

Almost Human

Created by J.H. Wyman and produced by J.J. Abrams, Almost Human is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids.  An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world.

This show is futuristic and going to be interesting.  Some people say robots will soon get smart enough to take over the human race.  Could this show serve as a wake up call?  The show premieres on Monday November 4th at 7pm central on FOX.

The Blacklist

Created by John Eisendrath, the plot of the show is interesting. The world’s most wanted criminal mysteriously turns himself in and offers to give up everyone he has ever worked with.  His only condition is he will only work with a newly-minted FBI agent (Megan Boone) with whom he seemingly has no connection with.

Why would a criminal turn himself in and rat other people out.  That is going to be the interesting part of this TV show!  This show premieres on Monday September 23rd at 9pm central on NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show

Created by Michael J. Fox and Will Gluck, this show is inspired by the former Family Ties actor’s life, Fox stars as a husband and father of three from New York City dealing with family, career and challenges — including Parkinson’s disease — as he goes back to work as a news anchor.

Since Michael J. Fox is a famous geek starring in those Back to the Future movies, this is a show that is worth a try!  The show premieres on Thursday September 26th at 8pm central on NBC.

The Tomorrow People

This show is based on the original British television series of the same name, the series follows a group of young people who possess powers as the result of human evolution.  These people are super-evolved humans with the three T’s (telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation), a coming of age story, and a big bad government organization led by Lucifer!

This show is getting a lot of buzz and I hope it’s worth watching!  This show premieres on Wednesday October 9th at 8pm central on The CW.
