Today, I have got two stories from Alabama that have national implications, one story will air on national TV, the other story features new technology!

Inside Edition Zebra Story

First of all, I got very sick to my stomach when I heard that two zebras were shot to death at a farm in Blount County.  I am a huge animal lover, and hearing that someone had the guts to kill two innocent zebras was sad to hear.  To recap the story, two zebras named Zippy and Zena were found shot to death on February 22nd at Sherrod Farm in Oneonta, Alabama.  The two zebras that were dead has holes in them bleeding from the mouth.  The family has been trying to find out who did this stupid act, and a reward for information leading to an arrest has been increased to $10,000.

Now, the news magazine show Inside Edition is going to air a story tonight about this sad story.  Zebras Zippy and her daughter Zena, were rescue animals.  And the Blount County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney are hoping to make an arrest soon.  Maybe whoever did this will turn themselves in after seeing this story go on national television?  Sadly, there have been other animals like sheep and horses shot and killed in this area.  Do some people have nothing better to do than shoot innocent animals to death?  I hope whoever shot these zebras is caught.  In the Birmingham TV Market, Inside Edition airs on FOX 6 at 6:30 pm.  To find where Inside Edition airs in your area, go to: http://www.insideedition.com/listings

Chara Kelley Google Glass

20140311_194234_269

Someone in Alabama has a pair of Google’s newest product called Glass.  Chara Kelly from Rainbow City got a pair of the glasses after entering and winning a contest to beta test the glasses by submitting to Twitter and Google Plus what she would do if she got Google Glass.  And yes, Chara even recorded her own TV interview on FOX 6 last night with Google Glass.

Chara has been to SXSW, Spain, Netherlands, Egypt, and other countries to demonstrate what Google Glass can do.  Chara is only one of only 8,000 people in Alabama and the world who are testing out the next big thing in technology.  And if you want to follow along with Chara with her adventures with Google Glass, follow her on Google Plus at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/110238305983468961336/posts, on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/user/MoandChara, and on Twitter @ExplorerChara.

Too bad I don’t have $1,500 to explore Google Glass as well.  Keep up with people using Google Glass with the hashtag #throughglass

Sunday Discussion: The 11-17-13 Midwest Severe Weather Outbreak

Geek Alabama Discussion

Today was a rough day across the midwest.  As of this writing, six people have been killed in Illinois and over 70 preliminary tornado reports and over 400 total severe weather were reported today.  This post is going to highlight some of the top photos and videos of the destruction today.  These people are going need some help.  Washington Illinois was one of the hardest hit towns today, these images from Twitter are tough to see.

This video from the YouTube channel Mike Brady shows the damage from Washington, IL taken with Google Glass.

Here is another video from the YouTube channel 28storms where Richard Williams took this video.

Here are more Twitter images from the tornadoes in Illinois from places like Centralia, Gifford, LaSalle County, Gardner, Peoria, Roanoke, and Pekin.

One issue I had today was the NFL not delaying the Ravens vs. Bears game until the storms were right on top of the stadium.  I shared this image from WNST and it got retweeted by many.  Thanks for sharing that image!

Here are videos of the tornadoes and storm damage from the YouTube channels Live Storms NetworkKDR Media, and US Tornadoes via Karla Konieczki.

The storms then moved into Indiana.  Here are tornado and damage pictures from Bone Gap, Lebanon, and Kokomo.

Here is one more video showing the tornadoes and damage from Indiana and Illinois from the YouTube channel StormChasingVideo.

And at the end of the day, the storm chasers did help out the people who were affected by the storms.  Plus you need a sunset of the tough day.

If you want to help the victims of the tornadoes today, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army can use some donations.  To give to the American Red Cross online, click here.  You can also donate $10 via mobile by texting REDCROSS to 90999.  To donate to the Salvation Army online, click here.  You can donate $10 via mobile by texting STORM to 80888.  I also wanted to highlight the team from Peoria TV station WEEK-TV for actually taking cover before the tornado hit their TV station.  When severe weather is coming, take cover!

And before I wrap this post up, I wanted to talk about The Weather Channel.  Last Tuesday, they came out with new weather graphics for all of their live programming.  Everything from the radars to the forecast computers were updated.  Now, weather information is scrolling at the bottom of the screen 24/7, even during commercials.  Here is a before and after video.

TWC did a good job with the live weather coverage today, but my only problem is the addition of even more non weather programming.  Unless severe weather is happening, you will see reality programming on TWC from 2-5 pm and 8 pm until 4 am the next morning.  On weekends, TWC will show other programming from 2 pm until 4:30 am the next morning.  All times are Eastern.  I guess they have to show something when the weather is non-eventful since people won’t watch.  Yep, I miss the old days of The Weather Channel.

Google Shows Off Google Glass Glasses

Picture1sajaka9a0pa

Google released a very cool video this morning!  Google is giving people a glimpse in how its Google Glass futuristic glasses would feel to the wearer.  Google Glass is augmented reality eyewear that uses voice recognition to take commands and display information. Some examples of how the glasses can be used include turn-by-turn navigation, taking photos and videos, and translating languages on the spot.

In the video below; it shows people wearing the glasses going about their everyday lives and other adventures, like skydiving, and shows them using Glass to record video, take pictures or navigate.  This video is very cool!

Today, Google also announced a way for select users to try out the glasses before they hit the market!  Google is looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass.  To be included, you need to tell Google what you would do if you had Glass.  You have to use the hashtag #ifihadglass on Twitter or Google +.  Your application must be 50 words or less and you can include up to 5 photos with your application and you can include a short video! (15 secs max)

The deadline for applications is February 27th.  If you are chosen, Google will reach out to you with an invitation to become a Glass Explorer.  Explorers will each need to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.  To learn more go to: http://www.google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one/.

To keep up with Google Glass; follow them @projectglass on Twitter or +projectglass on Google Plus.

Since I can’t afford the $1500; I still wanted to tell Google what I would do with the glasses. If I had Glass; I would use the glasses to enhance the events I cover for Geek Alabama. Enhanced photos and videos would put the reader closer to an event!  It would make the reader feel like they were at the event!
