Good News Fridays: Learn More About SpecialGlobe

Geek Alabama Good News Fridays

This week on Good News Fridays, I wanted to talk about a website where you can plan a trip to popular destinations around the world, for families with people on the autism spectrum and other special needs.  As you know, I am on the autism spectrum, and the folks from SpecialGlobe really like me, so they followed me along on my @nvyoung and @GeekAlabama Twitter accounts!  So, how did SpecialGlobe get started?

Meghann Harris, Senior Founder and CEO of SpecialGlobe, got to travel to many places around the world as a child and adult.  Those experiences have had a profound affect on who she is today and how she looks at the world.  She wanted to give the same experiences to her children, until her daughter was diagnosed with atypical Rett syndrome.  Doctors said she would never walk or talk, but she has come a long way.  Meghann got the idea of SpecialGlobe one night while sleeping, and saw the domain name available, so she got it!

After some thinking and ideas, Meghann wanted SpecialGlobe to be a place where families can get the knowledge and tools which would in turn empower them to travel the world with special needs kids and to broaden their lives through travel, art, and recreation.  The site allows parents the ability to book custom trips, book hotels, and share their experiences and learn from other parents and experts through forums and written articles about everything from tips and tricks, top ten things to do, and basic travel advice.

They have also developed their own itinerary guides that includes comprehensive information about special needs travel. Where to stay, where to eat, what wonderful activities would be available to you that your whole family could enjoy, where are the hospitals, where are the pharmacies, where can I get a beach scooter, where can I get a certified aid that could help my family while on vacation in each of these locales and much much more. It is their intent here at SpecialGlobe to gather any and all information about special needs travel under one roof where you can take your time to review and make decisions about what’s right for your family.

And a website like SpecialGlobe is needed today!  As of 2010, 13.5 Million (18.5%) of US children aged 18 and under were diagnosed with Special Needs, this number is going to get larger. Given the rise in diagnoses of children with some form of special needs (autism alone has grown from 1 in 88 to 1 in 68 in a matter of 4 years according to the CDC and census data) this is changing the portrait of the Global and American Family.  They want more than anything for all families to experience more of the world around them through exploration together. Travel builds lifelong memories for all of us. For Special Needs children this can be especially important and therapeutic. Vacation as therapy sounds right to SpecialGlobe.

When you go to SpecialGlobe, you can find things from travel tips, itineraries, ways to customize a trip, vacation and car rentals, hotel promotions, and more!
