The Evening Post: Mentone Springs Hotel Fire

Geek Alabama Evening Post

UPDATE: Here are three videos from the YouTube channel professornono showing the fire.

Here is another video showing the fire from a distance from the YouTube channel Joseph Turner.

Tonight, the Mentone Springs Hotel and The White Elephant store, built in 1884 by Dr. Frank Caldwell, has been destroyed by fire.  Pictures began to be shared on social media about the fire.  Then the owners, Darlene & Jim Rotch, reported that the hotel was lost on their Facebook page.

update

The hotel was one of Alabama’s oldest hotels, and was the last wooden Victorian hotel in Alabama.  The hotel was also named one of The New York Times 1,000 Places to Visit Before You Die.  The hotel was on the National Registry of Historic Places list and was purchased in 2010 by two families with a rich history and love for the Mentone area.  Below are pictures from people on social media.
