Movie Review: The Lego Movie

Advertisements

Last weekend, I joined many other people who went to see The Lego Movie.  And the movie was awesome!  There were so many great moments in this movie, that I am going to talk about this movie below.  So if you have not seen this movie yet, do not read below, SPOILER ALERT!

The movie was directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, which did a brilliant job!  And the film has the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman.  As you can guess, the entire movie is made out of Lego’s.  What I really liked was seeing things you would thought could not be made out of Lego’s, being done!  Like the smoke, the ocean, explosions, and even clouds.  Everything was designed out of Lego’s, and it was like you were really inside the Lego world.  The movie begins with Emmet Brickowski, who lives in the big city and is a construction worker.  And being a construction worker is easy in the Lego world, as something is demolished and rebuilt with someone’s imagination and Lego bricks.

One thing I found surprising, is Emmet using instruction cards to do his morning routine.  And Emmet is something of a nobody, with no real friends or accomplishments.  This character can easily be found as someone having Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism.  As you go though the film, I saw even more traits of Emmet having Autism, like seeing him struggle to speak in front of a crowd, and not being confident of himself.  Through the movie, you see Emmet become more confident, with the help of other characters, and he does save the day.  If anyone who has a disability needs a confident booster, take them to go see The Lego Movie!

Emmet sees Wyldstyle searching in the construction site after hours, and wanting everyone to follow the rules to the instruction books, he investigates and falls through the hole.  Emmet finds the Piece of Resistance, and of course he touches it, Emmet experiences vivid visions and passes out.  He awakens elsewhere, with the Piece of Resistance attached to his back, in the custody of Good Cop/Bad Cop, Lord Business police lieutenant.  I loved seeing the split personalities of Good Cop and Bad Cop!

We then learn the ultimate plan from Lord Business, which is to use the Kragle and freeze everything into place.  The Kragle is a weapon that uses super glue to freeze the Lego people into place.  Wyldstyle rescues Emmet and we see this amazing chase scene through the city with gunfire, explosions, smoke, and fire, all made out of Lego’s.  It was just awesome!

We then see what the Kragle can do to the Lego people.  Bad Cop/Good Cop is grilled in front of Lord Business.  Things got so bad, they used nail polish to rub off the face of Good Cop, that hurt!  Then the Kragle was used to super glue Good Cop Bad Cop’s parents into place permanently.  By the way, I know this sounds crazy, but Fox News has somehow compared The Lego Movie and Lord Business as something that forces a dangerous Liberal anti-capitalist message on America’s kids.  I can’t make this stuff up!

The pair goes into a western world and sees Vitruvius, who explains that he and Wyldstyle are “Master Builders” capable of building anything they need, both with great speed and without instruction manuals.  Continuing the story, Lord Business rose to power, and has captured most of the Master Builders to stop creativity.  This story is very similar to a communist power like Cuba, where everyone is equal and creativity is frowned upon.  As the “Special”, Emmet is destined to defeat him, yet Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are disappointed to find Emmet displays no creativity.  You keep seeing those Autism traits in Emmet throughout the movie.

While in the western world, (I loved the visuals of the western world, as everything was made out of Lego’s!)  The group is spotted by Bad Cop and is chased onto a train where the bridge is shot out by Bad Cop.  You think the end is here as the Lego people are falling to their deaths, when Batman shows up to rescue the people before the train crashes into the canyon.  We see that Wyldstyle and Batman have a relationship going, and by the way, this Batman should be the Batman played in all of his movies!

The crew ends up at Cloud Cuckoo Land, a chaotic place in a cloud where there are no rules.  It’s a place every preschool child would love to visit!  And a place where the remaining Master Builders are hiding.  I loved seeing the other superhero Lego characters including Shaq, 1980’s astronaut, and Princess Unikitty, who wants to spread love and charm, until she got angry during that final fight scene!  Soon, Cloud Cuckoo Land comes crashing into the ocean and many people are captured or killed.  Even the ocean was made out of Lego’s in this movie!  Emmet and the others soon break into Lord Business huge skyscraper building but are soon captured and before Vitruvius is killed, he admits the prophecy was made up, a shocker!

Lord Business throws the Piece of Resistance off the edge of the universe, sets his headquarters to self-destruct, and leaves with the Kragle while leaving Bad Cop behind. The ghost of Vitruvius, which glows in the dark and is on a string, tells Emmet that even if the prophecy isn’t real, Emmet can still save the world.  So Emmet, tied to the self-destruct mechanism’s battery, sacrifices himself for his friends, flinging himself off the edge of the universe.  It was a sad moment for the Master Builders, and we see Emmet going through the dark hole, then the movie takes a dramatic change!

We find out that the entire Lego universe is actually a huge Lego model, and Lord Business is actually The Man Upstairs (played by Will Ferrell), who loves Lego’s, that is, if that is his real Lego model.  The kid, named Finn, is playing with Emmet and the other Lego characters but the father does not want to have anyone playing with his Lego model.  And yes, there are signs like “keep off”, and “no touching” all around the model.  The Man Upstairs gets upset at Finn for mixing the Lego characters with the wrong playsets on the huge model.  The Man Upstairs even prefers to super glue the Lego Characters in place so they can not be moved.

Things get very emotional here, in the Lego World, Finn returns Emmet where he builds a huge robot.  And inspires the other Lego people to become creative to defeat Lord Business and his Kragle super glue device.  In the real world, Finn’s father looks at his son’s creations again and finds himself impressed.  Realizing his son based the evil Lord Business on himself, the father has a change of heart and allows his son to play with his Lego however he sees fit.  In the Lego world, Emmet convinces Lord Business that Business too is special as is everyone.  Moved by Emmet’s speech, Business destroys the Kragle and unfreezes his victims.  Seriously, the last 30 minutes of this movie is going to leave some people in some tears, it was very moving!

With the world saved, Emmet celebrates with his friends, and Wyldstyle, also known as Lucy, becomes his girlfriend.  However, alien Duplo beings beam down, announcing their intentions to invade, due to the father allowing Finn’s little sister to play with his Lego set as well.  I found The Lego Movie as awesome and well done!  The storytelling was excellent, the CGI animation was top-notch and at perfection, and all the Lego animations was just too cool to watch!  The entire movie has plenty of jokes both kids and adults will enjoy.  And with so much action and hidden Easter eggs, you will probably need to see this movie again just to catch everything you missed the first time around!

Yes, The Lego Movie might be a 100 minute toy commercial, but this movie has so much charm!  Just don’t be surprised if you or your kids are soon rushing down to a store to buy a Lego kit!  The Lego Movie is something everyone needs to see!  Kids will enjoy the action and animation, and adults will enjoy the storytelling and that ending that needs to be experienced, like the movie creators intended.  You might think The Lego Movie is something that could be made by Disney or Pixar, but this movie is going to bring the studios some great praise for their animation work!  The Lego Movie is about creativity and how it resides inside each and every one of us.  Everyone in the family and all ages will enjoy The Lego Movie, go see it!  And catch this special video where even commercials were made out of Lego’s!
