Food Review: Home Run Inn Frozen Pizzas

Geek Alabama Food Reviews

When you go to your local grocery store, there are many frozen pizzas you can choose from!  You can go for the cheap party pizzas, or pay up to $10 bucks for a premium frozen pizza.  I have tried every variety of frozen pizza I have found in the stores, and now, I think I may just have found my best frozen pizza!

Home Run Inn has been around in the Chicago area since the 1920’s!  In 1923, grandparents Mary and Vincent Grittani, named their tavern Home Run Inn after a winning run from a neighborhood baseball game shattered the front window of their newly purchased establishment.  For nearly 25 years, their South Side Chicago business remained a small neighborhood bar where Vincent served drinks and Mary prepared the meals.  In 1942, Nick Perrino married their daughter Loretta Grittani.  Nick was searching for a way to support his family like the rest of the thousands of World War II soldiers who returned to civilian life.  His need was meet in 1947 when he formed a partnership with his mother-in-law Mary Grittani.  Together they developed the recipe for Home Run Inn Pizza as it is known today!

The second Home Run Inn restaurant opened in 1987 in Darien, IL.  Over the next two decades, Home Run Inn opened six more pizzerias in the Chicagoland area.  In the late 1950’s, Home Run Inn expanded into the frozen pizza business and they were one of the first!  The business expanded USDA facilities in 1987 and 1996 to keep up with the growing demand!  Today, Home Run Inn continues as a family owned and operated business staying true to the original pizza recipe using only the finest ingredients when making their pizzas.  Their family’s determination, hard work, and pride that they feel in serving a quality product has brought Home Run Inn from a small corner tavern to a legendary pizza business.  Home Run Inn’s commitment to their customers is to continue making the same premium pizza that they started in 1947.

Home Run Inn Frozen Pizzas can be found in numerous stores in over 20 states.  And yes, they are here in Alabama!  The pizzas come in classic frozen, ultra thick frozen, ultra thin frozen, and signature frozen.  My local Winn-Dixie only carries the classic frozen kind and the varieties includes cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and pepperoni and sausage.  But Home Run Inn does carry other varieties like sausage fireball, margherita, deluxe, supreme, meat lovers, sausage and mushroom, and more!  I got a Home Run Inn classic pepperoni and sausage frozen pizza, and it was good!

The pizza comes wrapped in plastic and inside a box.  As you can see in the photo above, the cheese is already melted together.  And you get some big pepperoni slices and big chunks of sausage.  The instructions called for the pizza to be baked in a 450 degree oven for 15-20 minutes.  But check after 15 minutes, unless you want a really brown pizza!

After resting for a few minutes, the pizza is ready to be cut into and enjoyed!  The cheese is really stringy, like what you get when you order a fresh pizza from a pizzeria.  The crust is really flaky, the sausage and pepperoni had great flavor, I really enjoyed the big chunks of sausage, and overall, this is one really good pizza!  Consumer reports has reported that Home Run Inn frozen pizza is the number one frozen pizza in America.  And the frozen pizza was even tastier than pizza you get at Pizza Hut or Domino’s, that says something!

While chains like Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s change their recipes and modify their flavors to make their pizzas better, Home Run Inn has not changed a thing since 1947.  And the results show it!  If you want a great frozen pizza for a good price, get a Home Run Inn frozen pizza, you will not regret your decision!
