2013 was filled with some very big stories for the geeks and nerds out there. For people who really enjoys their technology and other geek/nerdy stuff, this post is for you! Here is my top 10 geeky stories for 2013!
Bitcoin Growth
There is a new currency out there that can be used anywhere around the world. Bitcoin is an online currency and is a proof of knowledge peer-to-peer payment network and digital currency based on an open source protocol. More and more businesses including a few in Alabama like Freshfully is now accepting Bitcoins! How long until major businesses like McDonald’s and Wal-Mart accepts them? I think Bitcoin is going to have a great 2014!
Playstation Four and Xbox One
For the 2013 Holiday Season, Sony and Microsoft introduced new gaming consoles! Both have sold a lot of units, but the Playstation Four has sold the most so far! I thought console gaming was dead because smartphones and computers was taking over in the gaming world. I guess many people proved me wrong!
NSA Snooping Programs Revealed
Why would our Federal Government be snooping on us? 2013 was a bad year for the Federal Government, not only because of the Healthcare.gov problems, but also because of the reported snooping from the National Security Administration, courtesy of whistle blower Edward Snowden. The public can not trust the Federal Government snooping on our social media posts, phone calls, and e-mails. It is a shame.
Doctor Who Turns 50
One of the most popular shows in the geek/nerd world is Doctor Who. The Day of the Doctor special was the biggest program for the geeks/nerds in 2013 with the special watched by many people on TV and in theaters. We also got to see the 12th doctor Peter Capaldi in action during the Christmas special!
Wearable Tech Is Growing
Products like Google Glass, FitBit, and the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch is changing how we use tech. Google Glass allows us to look at information and even take photos/videos from our glasses. FitBit makes sure we stay active and fit in our daily lives. And the Samsung Galaxy Gear syncs our smartphones with a wearable watch. I am interested to see what 2014 brings us in the wearable tech world!
Healthcare.gov Failures
The Federal Government took a big hit when their website called Healthcare.gov failed to sign up many people and was plagued with website error problems. Throughout 2013, the government worked on making the website better and right before the end of 2013, many people are able to access and sign up through Healthcare.gov.
Ban on Portable Electronic Devices Lifted
The Federal Aviation Administration is now allowing airplane passengers to use Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) during all phases of flight including takeoffs and landings. But don’t look for many airlines to change their policies. Because who wants to sit next to a person yapping on their smartphones while at 30,000 feet up in the air?
Micro Videos Growing
This has been a great year for short or micro videos! The app Vine has been very popular with its six second video format that can be looped. And Instagram introduced a 15 second video option along with photos. I expect to see new apps and video features added to existing apps in 2014 because people love making short videos!
Twitter Goes Public
Twitter went public on the stock market this year and is the second social media network to be traded on the stock market. When Facebook went public, it struggled for a while but now is trading at good numbers. Twitter started high but now is starting to fall down as well. But not to worry, I think Twitter’s stock price will rise in 2014!
Amazon.com Growth Plus Drones
Amazon.com has had a great 2013. CEO Jeff Bezos and the company has done a lot of great things! But the most shocking thing has to be those Amazon drones. Yes, I do see Amazon and other companies using drones within the next 10 years. I know most people are skeptical but I think the kinks will be worked out and drones will be used!
