This is week 47 in my series of Shape Up! The weekly post on what I did over the last week in my quest to getting healthier.
Well my food stamp card has arrived. For the next few months I will be getting $200 each month to help me get food. It’s better than starving yourself because of lack of income. On average I can spend around $6.50 a day to provide meals to myself. So for now at least I can have one meal every day. The statistics for food stamps are staggering right now! As many as 46.7 million Americans received benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in June 2012, at a cost of $6.2 billion. And 43 percent of SNAP recipients live at or below the poverty line. And I am one of those people who lives way below the poverty line. Here is my Alabama EBT card with the numbers blacked out.
I am one of those people who hates asking for help. Along with Asperger’s Syndrome I am also an Introvert. Introverts often avoid social situations because being around people drains their energy. Introverts like me needs time to recharge after being around people each day. That’s why I enjoy being in my apartment each night being online and watching a little TV. This is my “recharge” time and I really enjoy it! Since I am now on food stamps for the third time since 2006. I will be enjoying those Banquet TV dinners that cost 88 cents each at the store. Sure it’s not healthy but you have to eat what you can afford.
Newark, NJ mayor Cory Booker is in the middle of his food stamp challenge! He is living off of $30 of groceries for an entire week. Mr. Booker is going through hunger pains and caffeine withdrawal because of the limited food he has. He is keeping up a blog and recording videos about his experience. Here is his day six video.
For you folks who say food stamps or SNAP is waste of money let me tell you something. How would you feel going unemployed for 17 months and searching for your 14th job in seven years? How would you feel being rejected multiple times? How would you feel being socially awkward because you have Asperger’s Syndrome? Getting food stamps is providing me with food right now. Without them I would be starving and going without food for days at a time. I commend Cory Booker for going through the food stamp challenge. And he is right, going over the fiscal cliff could result in massive cuts for me to get food. The government needs to quit this baby like finger-pointing and come up with a compromise. I would not like to starve again.
By the way; follow Cory Booker on Twitter @CoryBooker. I follow him and you should too! And keep up with his daily blogs on his food stamp experience at: http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/articles/86654142.
