Trace Adkins Confederate Flag Controversy

During the Christmas Tree lightning ceremony at Rockefeller Center.  One singer drew a lot of controversy online.  Trace Adkins wore a Confederate flag earpiece during his performance of We Three Kings on NBC.  And this action drew a huge firestorm on social media.  Here is the video of his performance.

Before Trace Adkins performs to American troops in Japan for a USO event.  He put out this statement:

“As a proud American I object to oppression of any kind.

To me, the battle flag represents remembrance of my Southern lineage – I am a descendant of Confederate soldiers who followed that flag into battle.

I advocate for the preservation of America’s battlefields and honest conversation about our Country’s history.

To those who view the flag as a symbol of racism, that was not my message and I did not intend offense.”

I thought Trace Adkins did a very good performance.  I actually thought this was one of the best performances of the night.  And the Confederate flag earpiece should not deter how he performs his songs!  Since I live in Alabama; I see the Confederate flag all the time.  I see the flag waving in several yards.  And I see people wearing t-shirts depicting the Confederate flag.  Sure; Adkins is a lifetime member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.  But we all live in America; and that means we can do whatever we want!  If Trace Adkins wants to honor his southern heritage; he can do that!  I find nothing wrong with people who want to honor their southern pride!

I feel bad that the Confederate flag is under attack.  We keep hearing news of people being criticized for wearing or showing off the Confederate flag.  In the videos above; an African-American student wanted to display the Confederate flag in his dorm room.  Or a student wanted to wear a Confederate flag shirt.  Or a student was criticized for flying a Confederate flag from his truck.  So what if some people want to wear or fly the Confederate flag.  They have a right to do it!  Some people are offended of the Confederate flag because in their view it represents slavery.  But down here in the south; people will say the Confederate flag represents southern heritage and freedom.

Trace Adkins can do whatever he wants.  If he walked out on stage wearing a Confederate flag shirt; I would still watch him perform!  People in America have a right to express their beliefs!  Now what I don’t like seeing is people down here in Alabama trashing President Obama.  Alabama had the most racist tweets against the president.  And someone put this out praying for Obama to be Assassin.

Also Jeannie Nichols, the office manager of her family-owned business, Leesburg Guns & ProTackle; has put out this sign in the front of her store.

Even though I don’t agree with what these people are doing.  It’s still a free country and they can do whatever they want!  Aren’t we glad we live in America!
