Weekend Planning: 8-3 to 8-5


The first weekend in August is filled with many great events to go to in Geek Alabama territory.  First up is 32nd annual Woodstock 5K taking place on August 4th in Anniston.

This year the Woodstock 5K also hosts the Road Runners Club of America National Championship 5K Race.  So far there has been over 1000 runners that have signed up to run the 5K.  And at 7:30am the runners take off throughout the historic neighborhoods in East Anniston and Anniston High School.  The events begin with the pasta pigout on Friday evening at the high school.  Then during the 5K race there will be plenty of people along the route cheering you on in the humid summer morning.  Then when you finish you will get a race t-shirt and be part of a post-race party with food from Mellow Mushroom and Waffle House.  Plus there is a Kidstock 1 mile race for the kids to run as well!  So come on out early on Saturday August 4th and cheer the runners on!  For more information on the Woodstock 5K go to: http://www.annistonrunners.com/woodstock5k/

Also in the Anniston area is the 54th annual UCP Telethon benefiting United Cerebral Palsy of East Central Alabama.  This event taking place at the Anniston City Meeting Center will feature singers and performers, silent auction, inspirational stories, and items you can buy.  The telethon takes place on Saturday August 4th from 6-10pm and on Sunday August 5th from 12noon-6pm.  If you can not come out and donate in person you can call in your donation and watch live on Cable One Cable Channel 2 and WJXS TV 24, or listen on WDNG 1450 Newstalk Radio.  For more information on the UCP Telethon go to: http://www.ecaucp.org/

This weekend also features a major music festival happening in Albertville, AL.  The Main Street Music Festival takes place on August 3-4 in downtown Albertville.  On Friday August 3rd there will be the Albertville Idol competition, and the main act is Warm 2012.  On Saturday August 4th there will be the Powerhouse Battlefield, The Johnson Family Band at the Albertville Museum, Magic Chef magic show, and the main acts are Sister Hazel and Phil Vassar.  Plus there will be vendors and a massive kids area with an inflatable water park, Orange County “Patriot Chopper”, and an inflatable air gun shooting range.  This entire event is free!  And for more information on the Main Street Music Festival go to: http://www.mainstreetmusicfestival.com.

Another big event takes place in Bowdon,GA on August 3-4.  The Bowdon Founder’s Day celebrates the city’s 159th birthday.  On Friday August 3rd there will be vendors and entertainment throughout the evening.  On Saturday August 4th there will be the 32nd annual 5K run, parade, tours at the Lovvorn House, entertainment such as a street dance and gospel music.  And a fireworks show in the evening.  For more information on Bowdon Founder’s Day go to:  http://www.bowdonhistoricalsociety.com/Foundersday.html
